Cultural Arts Review Lady Gaga – Meghan Heldt

Lady Gaga has always been known to push the envelope in her music and her performances. Her latest album – Born This Way was released on May 20, 2011, and has many references to Christian and religion. The album consists of multiply religious imagery and metaphors about love, faith and devotion.  In an interview with E! News Lady Gaga said “I’m a religious and spiritual person who’s obsessed with religious art… I’m obsessed with it.” Her little monsters, her name for her fan base, can clearly hear her references in almost all the songs on the album.

The song Born This Way is all about being true to yourself and still have faith in a God. The song’s chorus, “I’m beautiful in my way ‘Cause God makes no mistakes I’m on the right track, baby I was born this way.” This chorus is repeated multiple times throughout the song and is referencing the God made you – “He made you perfect”. Referring that it’s okay to be different and not to be ashamed of who you are. Some religious leaders say it’s not okay gay, bi, or transgendered but in Lady Gaga’s music she doesn’t want her little monsters to feel that way. She is using her music to explain that you are allowed to worship God and still be true to yourself in a very liberal view, which is very different than the church leaders. In her music video of this song she talks about creation of good and evil and the balance of the two. The beginning of the video is similar to the creation story. How there is one supreme creator that made us.

Another song in her album is called Judas referring the Christian disciple who betrayed Jesus Christ. It’s interesting on why she would choose to write a song about a man who betrayed his Lord. In most Christian churches people see Judas a weak and sinful man who later kills himself for selling out Jesus. Lady Gaga song is about God fearing yet she still conducts in sinful activities knowing that it’s wrong. The lines of “In the most biblical sense, I am beyond repentance” discuss that she has sinned a lot in her life. That she is similar to Judas because she can’t be saved so clings to Judas and what he means – “Jesus is my virtue and Judas is the demon I cling to, I cling to.” The lyric show that she knows that God will save her but she can relate more to Judas. It’s an interesting twist to how people view Judas and sinners. I do think she brings up a good point in which we are all sinners and that people can relate to Judas. That in our weakness we can turn into something we hate within ourselves. Lady Gaga’s music video of Judas there is actors that play Judas and Jesus. It’s interesting to see a modern day twist to the story of Christ and him being betrayed. There is a scene that Lady Gaga get washed by a huge wave that I think is supposed to represent being washed away of sins of this world. That even though she is a sinner like Judas there is hope for anyone. A message she wants her little monsters to believe in.

Lady Gaga’s whole album is all about expressing yourself and having a faith in a God. I do believe that most of the songs relate specifically to Christianity since she grew up in a Catholic household and went to a Catholic school. It affects Christian listeners by expanding their view and making the religion more modern. Some people, like my Dad, are offended by her music and believe her song lyrics twist the word of God.  Lady Gaga will always been known for being extremely unique in her music and performance selections yet she has created a message for her monster in this album – be yourself and do not be afraid of it. Her music and changes the roles of Christianity and puts them into modern context for her listeners. Lady Gaga makes it so the original roles of man and women that the Bible set could be changed. This allows the rule to be adapted into our culture. By changing the originally meaning of the stories and words of God it makes her music more realistic for her listeners and her followers.
